One of the main reasons mothers turn to online sources for help or information is that the internet is a great place to get expert advice – and not just from the doctors, educators and nutritionists, but from other mothers too. You'd be surprised just how diverse and detailed the topics covered on advice-based sites can be. Certainly the internet can provide more information on most topics than out-of-date or hard to find informational books can.
Many mothers turn to the internet for advice even before they give birth to their first child. Pregnancy can be a strange and wonderful process for first-time mums, and it is important that they feel they can get in contact with more experienced mothers whenever they need to. Unusual symptoms, strange pains or cravings, and the progress of the baby within the womb are common queries. After giving birth even more questions arise – how and with what should the baby be bathed? What are safe clothes, toys and products? What food should be given to the baby, and when? Is it better to self-soothe or comfort? What is the normal rate of growth and development? All of these questions are answered online by other mums in similar situations.
Another common topic mothers seek advice on is allergies and food information. Allergies – whether environmental or food based – can be very frightening for parents, particularly if they have not exhibited themselves previously. Determining the allergy and the best way to treat it is best done as quickly as possible. Likewise, if your child reacts in an unusual way to particular foods or ingredients, you want to know as soon as you can whether these foods should be avoided.
